Dear Genevieve

Key project milestones

Community information event

Our next community information event is scheduled for Wednesday 23 April between 5pm and 6pm. Held at the Kings Centre on Osney Mead, it will be an opportunity to hear from Network Rail, Kier and Thames Water about the latest progress on the project and ask questions.

Railway bridge work

This week we’ve been continuing to prepare for digging down into the ground on the northern side of the railway bridge, putting temporary infrastructure in place so that we can safely work below ground level on the 16x 40-metre-long concrete piles that we installed there previously.

Today we're installing 18 long metal sheets into the embankment on the eastern side of the railway bridge, just down from the main station building (see images above). These have been installed as a temporary measure to support the embankment while we work alongside. We’re aware this work is disruptive. Sorry if it has disturbed you.

Once the temporary infrastructure is in place, we will excavate around the concrete piles, to crop them. Reinforced steel will then be installed. The tops of these piles will be concreted to form caps which will spread the load of the bridge and the walkway/cycleway structure that will sit on top of them (see images below).

Water main work

Thames Water and their contractor Barhale have almost completed their work on the large water main under the railway bridge. This is the strategic main that helps transport water supplies across the city. With the connection areas installed, the next two weeks will see it become operational for a period of testing.

Work will now start on completing the smaller water main that also runs under the railway bridge. This water pipe provides the water supply to streets in immediate the local area. As with the large water main pipe, they will be working on connection areas on both sides of the bridge:

  • Western side connection: opposite the junction with Mill Street. This work will start once the site of the large water main, between Mill Street and Abbey Road is removed.

  •  Eastern side connection: Close to Becket Street junction within the existing work compound.

Virgin Media work

Virgin Media have completed their work to install a new, larger, chamber in Frideswide Square (see images above). They’ve installed new cables and in a few weeks’ time will complete the connection work.

Sewer survey work

We’ve been working in Cripley Road and Cripley Place to survey the sewer system that runs beneath the road. This is in preparation for the main sewer diversion work that will be starting at the end of the month. The work had to take place at night for safety reasons, as the team needed to access manholes in the carriageway. They had to use pumps to manage the water within the system, so sorry if this disturbed you.
